COACH'S COMMENTS

GAME SUMMARY
  • The Bears took an early lead in game two of the series Friday, as they struck for two runs in the first off of Brandon Bak.
  • Jackson Bessette answered back for the Flames in the top of the second, hitting his third home run of the season to left-center field.

  • After the Bears answered with a run in the bottom of the second, the Flames tied the game in the third with RBI from AJ Henkle and Kendal Ewell.

  • The Bears re-gained another lead in the bottom of the fourth with four runs, taking a 7-3 advantage into the fifth inning. UIC answered in a big way in the sixth inning, plating four runs thanks in part to Ewell's eighth home run of the season, tying the game 7-7.

  • Following two more Bears runs in the home half of the sixth, the Flames tied the game once again in the top of the seventh on an infield single and two throwing errors by Missouri State.

James Harris then gave the Flames the 10-9 lead on an RBI single through the right side.

  • Ewell launched his second home run of the day an inning later, extending the Flames' advantage to 11-9.

AJ Taylor tacked on a run with an RBI single, extending the UIC lead to 12-9.

  • After a Bessette sacrifice fly to close the top of the eighth, the Flames got into some trouble in the bottom of the eighth, allowing the Bears to load the bases with no outs. Ryan Smith came on in relief, and struck out the first two batters he faced before inducing a groundout to escape the inning unscathed.

  • The Flames added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth with RBI from Ewell, Ryan Nagelbach, and Henkle, earning some breathing room with a 16-9 lead. The Flames retired the Bears in order in the ninth, evening the series at 1-1 with a 16-9 victory.

UIC and Missouri State will close their three-game series on Saturday morning, as the rubber match is set for an 11 a.m. first pitch from Hammons Field. Kendall Lyons will take the mound for the Flames, who are looking to earn their third MVC series victory.
