CHICAGO (April 18, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (22-12, 7-6 MVC) opened a three-game series against Murray State (23-14, 7-6 MVC) on Friday, as the Flames welcomed the Racers to Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium for the first time in series history. The Racers took early lead, and despite battling back several times, the Flames dropped the series opener by a final score of 13-9.
COACH'S COMMENTS
GAME SUMMARY
- After a pair of first inning runs for the Racers, the Flames answered back quickly, as Jackson Bessette (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) launched his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center field to narrow the deficit to 2-1 in the second.
Â
Â
- UIC exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third inning, establishing a 5-2 lead thanks in part to a two-run home run to right-center off the bat of Ryan Nagelbach (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield), his fifth long ball of the year.
Â
Â
- The Racers fought back to tie the game, plating a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the sixth to even the score at 5-5. Murray State added a five spot in the top of the seventh inning, gaining its second lead of the game at 10-5.
- Constantly competing in a crucial Missouri Valley Conference game, the Flames battled back in the home half of the seventh, pushing four runs across to pull within one at 10-9, highlighted by Jack Snyder's (Manteno, Ill./Kankakee CC) second home run of the season.
Â
Â
- That would be as close as UIC would draw in the series opener, as it was unable to complete the comeback, falling by a final score of 13-9.
