GAME SUMMARY
  • After some solid pitching on both sides to start the game, the Flames finally broke through in the home half of the second inning, pushing three runs across the plate, highlighted by a two-RBI single off the bat of Marcus Heusohn (Waterloo, Ill./Lindenwood) to give UIC a 3-0 lead. The two runs driven in were the first two of the 2024 season for Heusohn, who made his second start of the year Friday.
  • Dillon Schueler (Rock Falls, Ill./Sauk Valley CC) was dominant for the first five innings in his seventh start of the season, before surrendering five Salukis runs in the top of the sixth, giving SIU a 5-3 lead and chasing Schueler from the game.
  • The Flames answered back in the home half of the sixth, scoring a run on two Salukis errors to draw within one at 5-4. Heusohn delivered once again to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, as his third RBI of the game on a base hit to right center field drew the Flames level at 5-5.

  • James Harris (Chicago, Ill./Gwendolyn Brooks) put the Flames back on top in the bottom of the seventh inning, driving in the eventual winning run with an RBI single to put UIC ahead 6-5.

  • Kendal Ewell (Calumet City, Ill./Kentucky) added an insurance run for the Flames in the bottom of the eighth, earning an RBI with a bases-loaded walk to increase the lead to 7-5.
  • Reece Lawler (Gurnee, Ill./Iowa) earned his sixth save of the season in the ninth, retiring the Salukis following a leadoff walk.
