Track & Field Finishes Strong at Chicagoland Championships

The Flames men finish ninth, while the women place 11th in the team standings

ELMHURST, Ill. (April 7, 2024) – The UIC men's and women's track and field teams finished strong at the Chicagoland Championships over the weekend, with the men claiming a top ten finish as a team. Senior Haley Dahl (Belvidere, lll./Belvidere North) took home gold for her 400m hurdle performance, while the men's relay team won the 4x100m.
 
The meet, hosted by Elmhurst University, brought out more than 20 local collegiate track & field programs over the weekend. This year's Chicagoland Championships was the first time the event has been held since 2017.
 
COACH'S COMMENT
 "The return of the Chicagoland Championships provided a great experience and opportunity to compete against several universities from the Chicagoland area," said head coach Paul Zavala. "We had several memorable performances throughout the weekend and looking forward to building momentum as we get ready for the championship portion of our schedule."
 
TOP FINISHERS
Men
  • Freshman Amare Harris (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington), junior Max Rivera (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley), senior Sacrad Michelin (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and junior Paul Sackman (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) made up the 4x100m relay squad that crossed the finish line first, with a time of 41.31.
  • Sackman also represented the Flames in the 200m dash, placing third (22.43).
  • Senior Anthony Gordon (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) jumped a personal-best distance of 6.86m in the long jump to place third in the event.
  • The Flames finished ninth out of 21 programs at in the men's team standings.
 
Women
  • Dahl's first-place time in the 400m hurdles (1:03.93) moved her to third in the UIC record book and was also a personal-best.
  • The 4x100m relay team, consisting of freshman Sariyah Watson (Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb), senior Olivia Dumas (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb), freshman Chinenye Ifeajekwu (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) and sophomore Deja Richardson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) placed second in the event, with a time of 48.42.
  • Junior Nyarai Terry (Chicago, Ill./Thornton) placed fifth in the 100m hurdles (14.93).
  • UIC finished 11th out of 21 programs in the women's team standings.
 
UP NEXT
The Flames will head to Champaign, Ill. to compete in the Gary Wieneke Memorial, hosted by Illinois on Saturday. More information on the meet will be provided as it becomes available.
