Softball Begins Two-Game Weekday Series at Valparaiso Tuesday

The Flames aim to continue momentum after back-to-back conference series wins.

VALPARAISO, Ind. (April 8, 2024) – The UIC softball team (12-25, 5-7 MVC) heads back out on the road for a two-game Missouri Valley Conference weekday series against Valparaiso (8-22, 2-7 MVC) at the Valpo Softball Complex in Valparaiso, Ind. April 9-10.

Each game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. (CT) start and will be streamed on ESPN+. Live Stats will also be available at UICFlames.com. This pair of games are the first two of a three-game series against the Beacons, with the series finale taking place at Flames Field on April 30 at 5 p.m. (CT).

SCOUTING VALPARAISO
  • This will be the 90th time the Flames and the Beacons are slated to compete. UIC leads the overall series 67-22.
  • Valparaiso edged out UIC in its first season in the MVC last spring, winning the series 2-1. The Flames lone win came at home against the Beacons in a 7-6 victory behind a walk-off sacrifice fly from senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) back on April 25.
  • Valparaiso aims for its first series win in conference play. The team has wins against Bradley (Mar. 30) and Belmont (April 6) this season.
  • Sophomore Kam Utendorf has the fifth-best batting average in the conference this season, batting .360. She has tallied 27 hits, three doubles and five RBI for the Beacons.
  • Freshman Sydney McDermott has seen the most time in the circle for Valparaiso, having pitched 76.1 innings this season with a team-leading 37 strikeouts.
LAST TIME OUT: Illinois State
  • The Flames collected their second consecutive MVC series victory, taking two out of three games against Illinois State (13-26, 7-7 MVC) at Flames Field over the weekend.
  • Graduate student Alannah Cran (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) tallied eight hits throughout the series, batting .727. She walked it off for the Flames Friday night to give UIC a 6-5 victory behind an RBI single.
  • Freshman Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) batted .400 in the series, with three RBI on four hits and three RBI.
  • Graduate student Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis/Southern Illinois) collected the win in the circle in a relief appearance in Game Two of the double header, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing one walk and two hits. In the bottom of the seventh, Clark hit the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh to lead UIC's comeback from a four-run deficit, 10-9.
  • The Flames finished the series batting .356, tallying 31 hits with six extra base hits over the weekend.
