Baseball Wins Thrilling Series Opener at Bradley Friday

Solid Pitching Leads Flames to 12th MVC Victory

PEORIA, Ill. (May 3, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (28-13, 11-7 MVC) opened a three-game series against Bradley (12-29-1, 5-13 MVC) on Friday, as the Flames traveled to Dozer Park in Peoria for a 6 p.m. first pitch. After securing an early lead, stellar pitching helped guide the Flames to a 4-3 victory in the series opener, and UIC's 12th Missouri Valley Conference victory of the year.

COACH'S COMMENTS

GAME SUMMARY
  • Kendal Ewell (Calumet City, Ill./Kentucky) got the Flames off to a fast start in Friday's series opener, as he launched his team-leading 13th home run of the season with two outs, a solo shot giving UIC the 1-0 lead.
  • Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill./Northeast CC) doubled the UIC advantage two innings later, driving home James Harris (Chicago, Ill./Gwendolyn Brooks) with a rocketed RBI single up the middle.

  • After the Braves halved the lead in the third, the Flames struck for two more in the fourth, thanks in part to a 409-foot solo home run for AJ Taylor (Downers Grove, Ill./College of DuPage), his second of the season.

  • Dillon Schueler (Rock Falls, Ill./Sauk Valley CC) was stellar for the Flames in his 11th start of the year, striking out seven and allowing only two earned runs on the way to earning his team-leading fifth win of the season.
  • In his 12th appearance of the season, Ryan Smith (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) was strong on the mound, not allowing a hit in his two complete innings of work.
  • Closer Reece Lawler (Gurnee, Ill./Iowa) came on in the ninth inning, and after allowing a run and loading the bases with two outs, got a strikeout to end the game and secure the 4-3 victory. With the save, Lawler now has 10 on the year, a number that leads the MVC and ranks third nationally.

The Flames and Braves will continue their series on Saturday, as the two teams will meet for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Dozer Park. The game can be seen live on ESPN+, and live stats are available throughout the series.
