Long Ball Blasts Baseball Past Bradley Saturday

Flames Earn Fifth Straight Series Victory Behind Three Home Runs from Kendal Ewell

PEORIA, Ill. (May 4, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (30-13, 13-7 MVC) continued its series against Bradley (12-31-1, 5-14 MVC) on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Dozer Park. The Flames got out to an early lead for the second straight day, and continued to add on throughout the game, cruising to a 18-4 victory and seizing control of the series. The victory stands as UIC's 30th of the year, the quickest the Flames have gotten to 30 wins since 2017.

GAME SUMMARY
  • For the second straight day, Kendal Ewell (Calumet City, Ill./Kentucky) came to the plate with the bases empty and two outs in the first inning, and drove a solo home run out of the park, this time to left-center field, to give UIC the 1-0 lead early.

  • The Flames added two more runs before the top of the first inning was over, thanks to RBI singles from Jackson Bessette (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) and Pambos Nicoloudes (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central).

  • Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill./Lake View) added to the UIC lead in the second, blasting an RBI double to give the Flames a 4-1 advantage.

  • Following a Zielinski sacrifice fly in the third, Ewell and AJ Henkle (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) both drove in runs with RBI doubles, widening the gap to 7-1 in favor of UIC.

  • The Flames got another jolt of offense in the top of the sixth inning, as Ewell launched another solo home run to center field, and Nicoloudes drove in another with an RBI single.

  • Stepping back up to the plate just one inning later, Ewell smashed his third home run of the game, a three-run blast to put the Flames firmly ahead 13-2.

  • Despite a nearly 50-minute rain delay, the Flames got five more runs in the top of the ninth, including a three-run home run from AJ Taylor (Downers Grove, Ill./College of DuPage) and would go on to win by a final score of 18-4.

With the victory, the Flames move into a tie for second place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings at 13-7 with Evansville, who lost 8-4 on the road at Valparaiso on Saturday.

The Flames will look for the series sweep over the Braves on Sunday, as the two teams will square off at 1 p.m. CT at Dozer Park. The game will not be video streamed, but an audio stream will be available on the Flames Network, with AJ Schraffenberger calling all the action live from Peoria.
