Softball Opens MVC Tournament Against Murray State

Flames aim to avenge early series defeat to the Racers in the opening round of the conference tournament.

NORMAL, Ill. (May 7, 2024) – The No. 8-seeded UIC softball team (19-34, 12-15 MVC) begins postseason play at 10 a.m. (CT) Wednesday with an opening round match-up in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament against ninth-seeded Murray State (23-29, 10-16 MVC) at Marian Kneer Stadium on the campus of Illinois State in Normal, Ill. All tournament games will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live stats of all UIC games will be available at UICFlames.com. The winner of Wednesday's first-round game will face top seed and regular-season champion Southern Illinois in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. (CT) Thursday.

LAST TIME WE MET
  • UIC opened Missouri Valley Conference play on the road at Murray State on March 15-17, winning the first game of the weekend series before the Racers took the final two contests.
  • Graduate student Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) pitched two complete games against MSU, including UIC's 2-1 series victory opener. She finished the weekend with 12 strikeouts while holding the Racers to a .220 batting average.
  • Graduate student Alannah Cran (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) batted .625 during the Murray State series, scattering two doubles and three singles throughout the three-game set.
  • Redshirt freshman Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) went 2-for-3 in the series finale against the Racers to collect her first multi-hit game of the season.
 
SCOUTING MURRAY STATE
  • The Racers hold a narrow 3-2 lead in the overall series against the Flames.
  • Murray State won two of its final three MVC series over Valparaiso and Evansville.
  • The Racers' pitching staff is ranked second in The Valley with a collective 2.40 ERA.
  • Redshirt junior Lilly Fischer has a team-leading .286 batting average, sharing the team lead with 44 hits and adding 13 RBI.
 
LAST WEEKEND: BRADLEY
  • UIC finished up MVC play last weekend on the OSF Healthcare Field at the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria, Ill., falling 2-1 in a weekend series at Bradley.
  • Toniolo led UIC to a 4-1 victory on Saturday, pitching a two-hit complete game and striking out two.
  • Senior Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw) delivered a two-run single, while redshirt freshman Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Taft) had two hits and an RBI, and junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) added a late-inning RBI single.
  • Senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) led the team with four hits during the Bradley series, batting .444 in the three games.
