Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Offensive Outburst Propels Men’s Soccer Past Green Bay, 4-2

Flames score three goals in span of 9:18 late in second half to earn first win of season.

CHICAGO (Aug. 25, 2024) – Redshirt senior forward Bart Muns (Amsterdam, The Netherlands/Santa Barbara CC) collected two goals and an assist, including the go-ahead tally with less than 12 minutes remaining as UIC (1-1-0) picked up its first win of the 2024 season with a 4-2 victory over Green Bay on Sunday night at Flames Field.

Redshirt senior defender Jesus De Vicente (Casas Bajas, Spain/Iowa Western CC) added two assists and his 74th-minute corner kick led to the tying goal when it was redirected in by a Green Bay defender. That goal ignited a spree of three UIC goals in less than 10 minutes late in the second half that turned the momentum squarely in the home team's favor. Senior forward Joshua Torres (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick) iced the win with an 84th-minute goal.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UIC has scored seven goals in its first two matches of the season, the most for the Flames in their opening two contests since 1986, when they tallied eight times in their first two outings with a 1-0 win over St. Francis and 7-0 win over Illinois Tech (UIC also scored eight in two games to open the 1983 season).
  • This marks the second year in a row UIC has posted three-goal outings in its first two games. Last season, the Flames defeated NJIT (3-1) and St. Thomas (3-0) to start the campaign.
  • Six of UIC's seven goals this year have been scored by five different players, with Muns the only Flames' player with multiple goals thus far (the seventh goal was the Green Bay own-goal on Sunday night).
  • Muns posted his third multi-goal outing since his arrival at UIC last year and tied his career high with five points. He scored twice in MVC matchups against Belmont (Sept. 16) and Drake (Sept. 23). He also finished with five points in the Drake match, adding an assist.
  • De Vincente recorded his third multi-assist match since coming to UIC prior to last season. In 2023, he had two assists in back-to-back contests against Belmont (Sept. 16) and Chicago State (Sept. 19).

UP NEXT
  • UIC heads out on the road for the first time this season when the Flames travel to Madison, Wis., on Thursday to take on Big Ten Conference foe Wisconsin. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (CT) from the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex and the match will be streamed live on B1G+.
  • UIC then returns home on Labor Day night to welcome another Big Ten opponent, Northwestern to Flames Field. That Sept. 2 contest will start at 7 p.m. (CT) and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
