Cross Country Teams Prepare for Redbird Invite

Flames set to compete in second meet of the season on Friday

CHICAGO (Sept. 12, 2024) – The UIC men's and women's cross country teams are heading south to compete in the 2024 Illinois State Redbird Invite at Weibring Golf Club. The meet begins with the women's 6,000m race at 5 p.m. CT, followed by the men's 8,000m race at 5:45 p.m. CT.
 
The Flames will face several Missouri Valley Conference opponents, including host Illinois State, Murray State, Northern Iowa, and Valparaiso.
   
LAST TIME OUT
The UIC cross country teams both secured top-10 finishes at the Winrow-Valparaiso Open. Individually, junior Daniel Chavez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) led the Flames with a fourth-place finish, clocking a time of 18:08.7.
 
In their season opener, 11 runners from the men's team set personal bests, while five women also recorded personal bests. Additionally, five male runners broke the school record for the 6K.

FLAMES TO WATCH
Women:
  • Senior Daniela Martinez (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) will make her season debut for the Flames.
  • Sophomore Indigo Sterud (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) is coming off the Windrow-Valparaiso Open on Aug. 30, where she posted a time of 18:55.6 in the 6,000-meter race.
  • Sophomore Emma Dubie (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) finished with a time of 18:54.0 in the 6,000m race, earning a top-30 finish at last Friday's meet.
Men:
  • Junior Daniel Chavez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) placed fourth at the Windrow-Valparaiso Open on Aug. 30, with a time of 18:08.7 in the 8,000-meter race.
  • Friday will be a season debut for senior Luke Malone (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder).
  • Sophomore Alexander Das (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) contributed to the Flames' success at the season opener with a time of 18:34.9 in the 8,000-meter race.
 
RACE INFORMATION
The Flames will begin racing at 5 p.m. CT with the women's 6,000-meter event, followed by the men's 8,000-meter race at 5:45 p.m. CT. The meet will be held at Weibring Golf Club, located at 800 Gregory Street in Normal, Illinois. Live results will be available for fans unable to attend.
