Men’s Soccer Earns First MVC Win of the Season Over NIU

Flames Tally Two Highlight Reel Goals in Lopsided Victory

DEKALB, Ill. (Sept. 28, 2024) – The UIC men's soccer team (5-4-0, 1-1 MVC) competed in its first Missouri Valley Conference road match of the season Saturday night, as the Flames traveled to DeKalb to take on Northern Illinois (2-8, 0-2 MVC).
 
After a back and forth first 20 minutes of the match, the Flames earned a free kick just outside of the Huskies 18-yard box. In the 21st minute, Jesus De Vicente (Casas Bajas, Spain/Iowa Western CC) took that free kick and careened a shot off the right post, and the rebound was cleaned up by Darrell Turcios (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) to give the Flames the early lead.
 
The second half erupted into offensive chaos, as the Flames got tallies from Rui Reis (Lisbon, Portugal), Max Aquino (Berwyn, Ill./J. Sterling Morton West), and Jack Finnegan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) to pull ahead 4-1. The Huskies would tally a quick answer to Finnegan's 75th minute tally, but the Flames held on defensively, securing the 4-2 triumph.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH SEAN PHILLIPS
"One of the toughest things to do in college sports is to win on the road, and we found a way to do that tonight," commented head coach Sean Phillips. "I thought we were solid for the first 75 minutes of the match, and now we need to finish the last 15 minutes of matches moving forward. We allowed NIU to stay in the game late, so there is plenty to improve on as we look ahead to Bowling Green."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Turcios' first half tally on a rebounded free kick was his second goal of the season, scoring his first of the year on Sept. 15 at home against Marquette.
  • Scoring just two minutes into the second half, Reis re-claimed the solo team lead in goals, notching his fourth to leapfrog Bart Muns (3).
  • UIC's four goals in Saturday's match is the second time the Flames have scored four this season, with the first happening Aug. 25 against Green Bay (W, 4-2).

  • The Flames will return to Chicago following Saturday's match, as they will take six days off before hosting Bowling Green on Oct. 5. Kick-off from Flames Field is set for 7 p.m. CT, and admission is free for all in attendance. The match will not be live streamed, but stats will be available via UICFlames.com.
