DEKALB, Ill. (Sept. 28, 2024) – The UIC men's soccer team (5-4-0, 1-1 MVC) competed in its first Missouri Valley Conference road match of the season Saturday night, as the Flames traveled to DeKalb to take on Northern Illinois (2-8, 0-2 MVC).
After a back and forth first 20 minutes of the match, the Flames earned a free kick just outside of the Huskies 18-yard box. In the 21
st minute,
Jesus De Vicente (Casas Bajas, Spain/Iowa Western CC) took that free kick and careened a shot off the right post, and the rebound was cleaned up by
Darrell Turcios (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) to give the Flames the early lead.
The second half erupted into offensive chaos, as the Flames got tallies from
Rui Reis (Lisbon, Portugal),
Max Aquino (Berwyn, Ill./J. Sterling Morton West), and
Jack Finnegan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) to pull ahead 4-1. The Huskies would tally a quick answer to
Finnegan's 75
th minute tally, but the Flames held on defensively, securing the 4-2 triumph.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH SEAN PHILLIPS
"One of the toughest things to do in college sports is to win on the road, and we found a way to do that tonight," commented head coach
Sean Phillips. "I thought we were solid for the first 75 minutes of the match, and now we need to finish the last 15 minutes of matches moving forward. We allowed NIU to stay in the game late, so there is plenty to improve on as we look ahead to Bowling Green."
