Normal, Ill. – Remaining in state, the UIC women's soccer team hit the road to take on the Illinois State Redbirds in an away Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) contest. In a defensive battle that only saw five shots on goal, the Flames (5-6-4, 1-2-3 MVC) and Redbirds (5-4-7, 2-0-4 MVC) battled to a 0-0 draw.
UIC came up with the first shot of the match in the 15
th minute.
Riley Collett recorded the chance after carrying the ball from the Flames' own defensive half all the way to the Redbirds' 18-yard box. Collett struck a right-footed shot, but a Redbirds defender blocked the opportunity, keeping the score nil-nil early in the game. The match would go on to be a defensive battle between the two sides, with neither side allowing the other many offensive opportunities. The half would end tied at 0-0, with the Redbirds outshooting the Fames 4-2, placing one shot on goal to none.
Bella Baker picked up the Flames' only other shot on the half in the 37
th minute, but her attempt would be off frame.
Francesca Faraci recorded one save.
Underway in the second half, the Flames were pushing offensively, looking to break the deadlock.
Chopper Carriere took a shot in the 51
st minute that would be off-frame. In the 55
th minute, Collett took a shot from point-blank range, but the Redbirds' goalkeeper came up with a tremendous save, keeping the game at 0-0. Taking the ball downfield, the Redbirds would have a chance of their own, but
Sara Sanabria would make a huge diving save, using her fingertips to keep the ball out of the goal. This would mark one of two saves for Sanabria.
Sophia Jaime joined in on the shot opportunities in the 70
th minute, but the Redbirds' goalkeeper came up with another huge save to keep the score at nil-nil. By the final whistle, neither team was able to find the back of the net, resulting in a nil-nil draw.
