CHICAGO – Four UIC men's soccer players have been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete Team, the conference announced Tuesday. Senior midfielders Preston Huitron and Rui Reis, redshirt junior defender Darien Martin and junior midfielder Darrell Turcios all received the honor for the first time in their respective careers.

The criteria for the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team mirrors that of the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Team standards. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at their current institution.

Huitron (last name pronounced HUE-tron), who was a CSC Academic All-District selection last fall, appeared in 13 matches this season (three starts) and amassed 18 total shots (five on goal). During his four years at UIC, the Aurora, Ill., native played in 54 matches (nine starts) and registered one goal and three assists with 67 total shots (20 on frame). He is currently majoring in management at UIC and maintains a 3.65 cumulative GPA.

Reis (name pronounced ROO-ee RAY-sh) was a preseason all-MVC selection this year, playing in all 18 matches and starting 14 times. He collected two goals, three assists and seven points, while his 55 shots (21 on goal) ranked among the top 25 in the nation all season long. During his two years at UIC, Reis appeared in all 35 matches for the Flames, earning 31 starts, while compiling six goals, seven assists and 19 points, with 89 total shots (39 on goal). Originally from Lisbon, Portgual, Reis is completing work on his bachelor's degree in business administration at UIC with a 3.63 GPA.

Martin emerged as a key contributor for the Flames this season, playing in 16 matches and earning a career-high six starts. During that time, he recorded the first two points of his career (both on assists) and had five total shots (three on goal), while helping the UIC defense post five shutouts. In his three seasons with the Flames, he has played in 38 matches (10 starts) with nine shots, five of which were on frame, while contributing to 13 UIC shutouts. A member of the University's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), Martin is originally from Palatine, Ill., and is working towards his degree in human development & learning with a 3.52 GPA.

A second-team all-MVC honoree this season, Turcios (name pronounced duh-RELL TUR-see-ohs) posted career highs in all statistical categories in 2025. Hailing from San Lorenzo, Honduras, he appeared in all 18 Flames matches this year (starting 14 times) and he ranked among the top 10 in the MVC in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14). Turcios also played a pivotal role in one of UIC's biggest wins of the season, scoring twice in a Sept. 1 road victory at Big Ten Conference foe Northwestern, including the match-winning goal in the 84th minute. He currently maintains a 3.73 undergraduate GPA.

UIC (10-3-5) advanced to the semifinals of the MVC Tournament for the second time in three seasons, while tying a school record for the fewest losses in a single year. The Flames also appeared in the top 10 of the United Soccer Coaches West Region rankings nearly every week during the 2025 season.
