Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Drops Boardwalk Battle Opener to High Point, 90-80

Flames to face Southern Indiana in third-place game at 4 p.m. (CT) Saturday.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Freshman guard Andy Johnson scored a season-high 17 points and junior guard/forward Mekhi Lowery added 15 points (7-9 FG), 10 rebounds and seven assists, but No. 6 (Mid-Major) High Point did just enough to edge past UIC, 90-80 in the opening round of the Geico Boardwalk Battle on Thursday at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. Johnson and Lowery led five Flames in double figures, as junior guard Ahmad Henderson II scored 16 points, freshman guard Rashund Washington Jr. added 13 points and six rebounds and redshirt freshman forward Jayce Nathaniel chipped in 11 points for UIC (3-2).

The Flames wound up outshooting High Point (5-1) from the field, connecting at a 49.2 percent clip, and won the battle on the glass by a 37-28 margin, but the Panthers, who are the two-time defending Big South champions and reached the NCAA Tournament last year, had the advantage at the foul line, going 30-of-37, while UIC was 17-of-24.
