Baseball Splits Saturday Double Header with Indiana State

Flames Earn Gutsy Win in Series Finale Under the Lights

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (6-20, 2-4 MVC) closed out its three-game Missouri Valley Conference series with Indiana State (13-14, 4-2 MVC) on Saturday, as the Flames and Sycamores met for a double-header at Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium.

GAME ONE RECAP
In a back-and-forth early affair, UIC tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning, as Jackson Bessette brought home the Flames' first run on an infield ground ball that was mishandled by Indiana State's shortstop, scoring Luke Nowak. The Sycamores responded with five unanswered runs over the next three frames before an AJ Taylor sacrifice fly in the fourth brought the score to 6-2. Taylor narrowed the gap once more in the sixth, as his two-run home run brought the Flames within three at 7-4.

The Sycamores plated five more runs over the next two innings, extending their lead to 12-4. Despite a late charge from the Flames who plated three runs in the ninth, Indiana State took game one of the double-header by a 13-7 final score.

GAME TWO RECAP
Game two of the double-header was the tightest game of the weekend between the Flames and Sycamores, as pitching dominated the story in the first few innings. Indiana State took the 1-0 lead in the third inning, a lead it would hold until the home half of the sixth inning, when James Harris launched a game-tying home run, his fourth of the year to make it 1-1.

After the Sycamores re-gained the lead in the top of the seventh 2-1, UIC came storming back once more plating two in the bottom of the seventh highlighted by a DJ Butler sacrifice fly to take a 3-2 lead. UIC would add an insurance run on a safety squeeze from Terrick Thompson-Allen, and thanks to 2.1 strong innings in relief from Tommy Egan, would go on to win the finale by a final score of 4-2.
