Softball Drops Back-to-Back Games

Day one at the Hoosier Classic saw the Flames fall 7-1 to IU Indy in game one before falling to Bowling Green 7-6 in game two

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana (March 7, 2025) – In their final non-conference tournament of the season, the UIC softball team traveled south to the campus of Indiana University to take part in the Hoosier Classic. Opening tournament action, the Flames had double-header as they took on the Indiana University Indianapolis Jaguars and the Bowling Green State University Flacons. In game one against the Jaguars (4-13), the Flames (4-16) fell 7-1. In game two, the Flames (4-17) fell to the Falcons (4-13) 7-6. 

Jojo Santiago (Channahon, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) had herself a day, going for a combined 4-for-8, with a triple, a home run, three runs, and two RBI's.  

GAME ONE RECAP 

Wasting no time, the Jaguars got on the board with two runs in the first inning to take the lead. In the bottom of the second, the Jaguars extended their lead with one run. With the Flames up to bat in the top of the third inning, Santiago hit a lead off triple to get on base before later scoring off a Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) ground out. In the bottom half of the inning, the Jaguars tacked on another run, taking a. 4-1 lead. The fourth and fifth inning came and went with no runs from either side before the Jaguars closed out the game with a three run sixth inning, ultimately winning the game 7-1.  

Santiago went 2-for-4 with a triple and one run.

GAME TWO RECAP 

In their second game of the day, the Flames and Falcons combined for a five-run first inning. The Falcons came out with a 3-run home run to begin the game, but the Flames were able to answer to take a one-run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sequoia Sanchez (Corona, Calif. / Roosevelt) put the Flames on the board with a two RBI double down the left field line before Siena Stickney (Mission Viejo, Calif. / Capo Valley) hit a two RBI single, giving the Flames a 4-1 lead at the end of the first inning. The score went back in favor of the Falcons in the top of the second when they tallied four runs to take a 7-4 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Santiago made it a one-run game when she recorded her second career home run, ripping the ball to left field. Unfortunately for the Flames, they were unable to plate anymore runs, falling to the Flacons 7-6.  

Sanchez finished 2-for-4 with a double, one run, and two RBI's.
