MURRAY, Ky. – The UIC baseball team (9-23, 5-6 MVC) resumed its weekend series against Murray State (22-9, 6-5 MVC) Saturday afternoon, as the Flames looked for a crucial Missouri Valey Conference victory over the surging Racers who had won their last seven games coming into the day.
Â
Highlighted by contributions up and down the lineup, UIC jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the opening two innings, highlighted by a
James Harris RBI double, and RBI singles from
Christian Holmes and
Luke Nowak.
Â
Following two Racers runs in the second, the score would remain 5-2 for four full innings before
Lucas Smith drove in his second run of the day with a single to right field. The Flames would add two more runs in the eighth thanks to a ground out and a fielder's choice legged out by
DJ Butler.
Smith would tally one more RBI in the ninth, helping lead UIC to the 10-4 victory.
Â
Tommy Egan earned the victory in his fourth start of the year, improving his season record to 2-1 with a five-inning effort, allowing just two earned runs and striking out two.
Â
With today's win and a potential Evansville loss (game in progress), UIC would climb from seventh to sixth in the MVC standings.
