Track and Field Earns Two Individual Event Victories at the Normal Invite

Daniel Chavez won the 1500m for the Men and Alessia Sarussi won the 800m for the Women.

NORMAL, Ill. – The UIC men's and women's Track and Field teams saw two winners with Daniel Chavez and Alessia Sarussi  both winning an event respectively, at the Normal Invite hosted by Illinois State on Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12. As a whole, the Flames had 22 new personal bests across the weekend, with the men's team placing fourth out of seven teams and the women's team placing sixth of nine teams.

MEN
  • Daniel Chavez won the 1500m in a time of 3:53.29, setting a new personal best and the seventh best time in school history..
  • Paul Sackman  placed second in the 100m with a time of 10.90.
  • Amare Harris ran a new personal best in the 400m with a time of 21.86, good enough for fourth place.
WOMEN
  • Alessia Sarussi won the 800m in a time of 2:11.96, the sixth best time in school history.
  • Ava Maglaya jumped a new personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 11.51m, which placed fourth overall.
  • Nyarai Terry placed sixth in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 15.07.
 
COACH'S COMMENTS
"Today we had several strong performances from each of our event groups with several new additions to our Top 10 All Time Lists." said head coach Paul Zavala."We are excited with the current development of our team and getting ready for another great competition next weekend at Indiana State ."
 
UP NEXT
The Flames will head to Terre Haute, Ind. for the Gibson Invitational Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19. The meet will be at the Gibson Track and Field Complex.
