CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (10-25, 6-7 MVC) opened a three-game series against Missouri Valley Conference leading Missouri State (19-17, 10-3) on Friday, as the two met on a cloudy afternoon at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
Â
The Flames jumped out to an early advantage in the bottom of the first, as a
Terrick Thompson-Allen sacrifice fly put UIC ahead 1-0. After the Bears answered with one in the second,
AJ Taylor re-established the lead in the home half with an absolute no-doubt home run to left field to make it 2-1.
Â
The UIC offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, extending its lead to six at 7-1 thanks in part to back-to-back home runs from
Thomas Curry and
Colin Husko. Missouri State's potent offense wouldn't be silenced much longer, however, as the Bears plated three in the fifth to pull within three at 7-4.
Jackson Bessette's team leading seventh home run in the home half of the fifth re-gained the four-run lead for the Flames.
Â
Lucas Smith's seventh inning solo home run put UIC ahead 9-6, and the ensuing pitching change led to an ejection of visiting manager Joey Hawkins. The Flames would go on to win by a final score of 9-6, with
Zack Millsap earning his third save of the year.
