Baseball Earns Series Victory over Missouri State with Double-Header Split Saturday

Flames Score Eight or More Runs in All Three Games of Series, Take Two of Three from Bears

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (11-26, 7-8 MVC) finished its series against Missouri State (20-18, 11-4) on Saturday, as both sides were in search of a series victory in a double-header after the Flames took game one of the series on Friday evening.
 
GAME ONE RECAP
The Bears opened the scoring early on Saturday afternoon, as Missouri State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single. UIC answered back immediately, as Lucas Smith's two-run home run in the second was the first hit of the day for the Flames and gave them the 2-1 advantage.
 
Missouri State answered back with nine unanswered runs, tallying one in the third, five in the fourth, and three in the seventh to take a 10-2 advantage.
 
UIC would not go down quietly, as the Flames struck for five in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Thomas Curry to bring the score to 10-7. The Flames loaded the bases in the eighth with no outs but could only muster one run on a Colin Husko hit by pitch, and despite getting the tying run on base in the ninth, fell to the Bears by a 10-8 final score.

GAME TWO RECAP
 
The UIC offense came out with purpose early on in game two Saturday, as the Flames struck for six runs in the bottom of the second inning, punctuated by home runs from Thomas Curry and David Cox to jump out to a 6-0 lead. UIC added another run in the fourth, as a designed first and third pickle play with James Harris allowed Jackson Bessette to come in to score from third. Following the first Bears run of the game in the fifth, Curry's fourth RBI of the day on a sixth inning RBI single re-gained the seven-run lead for UIC at 8-1.
 
Missouri State tallied a single run in the top of the seventh and a solo home run in the eighth, pulling to within five at 8-3. Despite a two-run top of the ninth, the Flames would go on to earn the 8-5 win, as well as the 2-1 series victory over Missouri State.
