Chicago, Ill. – For their Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) series finale, the UIC softball team and the Murray State University Racers took Flames Field for an early afternoon contest on Sunday, April 6th. With the visitors leading the series, the Flames looked to turn action around, and that they did. After a scoreless first inning, the Flames (5-33, 1-12 MVC) put themselves on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second and led for the remainder of the game, bringing an end to their losing streak as they defeated the Racers (13-22, 4-11) 5-1.
RECAP
With no action through the first 1.5 innings, Larissa Ortiz hit a lead-off home run, her first of the year, to left field in the bottom of the second to give the Flames momentum and the early lead. Hailey Cowing then carried that momentum into the third inning as she nailed the ball to left-center field, recording a two-run home run, giving the Flames a 3-0 lead at the end of three. Fourth-inning action came and went before the Flames extended their lead in the fifth with two runs, going ahead 5-0. Nina Pesare scored off an Ortiz single to center field, while Cowing scored off a throwing error. In the top of the sixth inning, the Racers recorded their lone run of the game with a solo home run to right field. Allowing no more runs, the Flames earned their first MVC win of the 2025 season as they defeated the Racers 5-1. Alyssa McIntosh earned the win on the mound for the Flames.
