NORMAL, Ill. – The UIC baseball team (17-29, 13-9 MVC) opened a critical three-game series at Illinois State (22-25, 11-11 MVC) on Friday, with the Flames holding a one-game advantage over the Redbirds in the MVC standings coming in to the game.
Â
UIC wasted no time jumping out to an early advantage, striking for two runs in the opening half inning on a
James Harris two-RBI double to left center field.
David Cox notched his own RBI double an inning later, giving UIC the 3-0 lead headed to the third inning.
Â
The Flames blew the game open in the third inning, plating three more runs highlighted by a two-RBI single from
Jackson Bessette and an RBI double from
Cox.
Â
Dillon Schueler was outstanding for his third straight start, not allowing an earned run over seven innings and striking out a season-high 10 on the night.
Â
The Flames added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth on a
Thomas Curry double, and despite a trio of Redbirds runs in the ninth, UIC cruised to a series-opening 8-3 victory.
