Women’s Soccer versus Indiana State Ends in Draw

Flames and Sycamores battle to 1-1 draw

Terre Haute, Ind. – Back on the road in Indiana for early conference play, the UIC women's soccer team traveled south to take on the Indiana State Sycamores for its second Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) contest. The Flames (4-5-2, 0-1-1 MVC) came out hot, scoring in the 14th minute of action to take an early lead. With 20 minutes remaining in the contest, the Sycamores (4-3-5, 0-0-2) scored the game-tying goal, leading to a 1-1 conference draw between the two sides.

The Flames wasted no time getting on the board, scoring off their second shot of the contest in the 14th minute. Sara Sanabria started the action, clearing the ball out of the Flames' defensive half. A Sycamore defender would get a head on the ball but would send the ball deeper into the Flames' offensive half, where Riley Collett entered a footrace with another Sycamore defender. Fighting for control, Collett would gather the ball inside the 18-yard box and take a settling touch before ripping a right-footed shot into the lower right corner of the goal to give the Flames a 1-0 lead with her first goal of the season. In the middle of the half, the Sycamores would find the back of the net off a corner kick, but due to a handball, the goal would be called back, allowing the Flames to remain ahead 1-0. With the Sycamores picking up the pressure, the Flames held strong, keeping their one-goal lead into halftime.

Second-half action saw the Sycamores continue to put on the pressure while the Flames fought to keep their lead. In the 70th minute, the Sycamores scored the tying goal. Just outside the upper right corner of the 18-yard box, Kaitlynn Long of the Sycamores fired a shot into the right upper 90 of the net, tying the match at 1-1. For the remaining 20 minutes of action, both teams would go on to record chances at goal, but neither could find the back of the net, resulting in a 1-1 draw at the final whistle.
