CHICAGO – For their Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) home opener, the UIC women's soccer team welcomed the Valparaiso Beacons to Flames Field. Both teams entered the match looking for their first conference win, but a defensive battle between the Flames (4-5-3, 0-1-2 MVC) and the Beacons (3-5-3, 0-1-2 MVC) ended in a 1-1 draw.
Valparaiso came out quick, scoring their only goal of the contest in the 4
th minute to take a 1-0 lead. UIC looked for a quick response, with an attempt by
Hannah Gryzik in the 7
th minute, but the Beacons' goalkeeper would make the save, keeping the visiting team in the lead. A defensive battle ensued between the two sides, with both teams limiting the other's chances. Just before the halftime whistle,
Camryn Ries would take a chance outside the 18-yard box, striking a left-footed shot across the goal that just went wide. The Beacons remained ahead at the half.
With 45 minutes down and 45 to go, the Flames looked to pick up the pressure. The first shot of the half wouldn't come until the 61
st minute, but the Beacons would send the ball wide of the goal off a corner kick attempt. With the Flames in possession of the ball,
Francesca Faraci sent the ball up the field on the goal kick. Trying to gain possession from the kick,
Sophia Jaime would get fouled, earning the Flames a free kick halfway into the Beacons' defensive half.
Julia Thomson stepped up to take the kick for the Flames, sending the ball into the box, where it bounced around before making its way up the field. As both teams fought to gain control of the loose ball,
Emmy Higgins would flick the ball back towards the Beacons' goal and into the path of
Bella Baker. Fighting off her defender, Baker found herself in a 1v1 opportunity with the Beacons' goalkeeper and would place a right-footed shot into the back of the net, tying the match. Both teams went on to have two more chances each, but neither would find the back of the net, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
