Volleyball Completes Reverse Sweep Against Southern Illinois

The Flames collect their first Missouri Valley Conference play behind Peter’s 23-kill night.

CARBONDALE, Ill. – After trailing 2-0 entering the third set, the UIC women's volleyball team (5-11, 1-3 MVC) secured a reverse sweep on the road Saturday night, defeating Southern Illinois (9-7, 3-1 MVC) in a five-set thriller to cap off its second week of Missouri Valley Conference play.

Senior Gabi Peter collected a collegiate-high 23 kills behind a .413 hitting percentage in the win. Senior Tamara Kisic completed a double-double, securing 15 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Robyn Ward secured 10 kills and four total blocks across five sets.

The Flames dropped the opening set, 25-22, after Southern Illinois took control midway through the frame and held off UIC's late push. UIC answered an early 4-2 deficit with a 7-5 lead, with sophomore Emma Colombari providing a kill and sophomore Sasha Pellettieri, Kisic and Ward contributing blocks. The Salukis regained the lead late, but freshman Judy Asar's service ace pulled the Flames within 21-20. Kisic's kill made it 23-22 before Southern Illinois closed the set.

UIC took an early 5-3 lead in the second set after falling behind 2-0, with kills from Colombari and Ward helping the Flames move in front. Southern Illinois responded by tying the set at 13-13 before using a 6-0 run to take control. Kisic, Peter and Ward added late kills, but the Salukis held on for a 25-20 victory.

The Flames answered in the third set, building a 12-10 lead before extending the advantage to 15-10 on kills from Peter and Ward. Southern Illinois cut the deficit to 15-13, but UIC responded with another Peter kill and maintained its lead. Peter's kill put the Flames ahead 24-21 before sophomore libero Ava Young finished the set with a service ace, giving UIC a 25-21 win.

UIC carried the momentum into the fourth set, turning a 14-13 lead into a 21-14 advantage with a 7-1 run with Kisic delivered three consecutive service aces during the stretch. Southern Illinois battled back to make it 24-21, but a service error gave the Flames a 25-21 victory and forced a deciding fifth set.

Southern Illinois took a 7-6 lead in the deciding set before UIC answered with two Peter kills and a block from Colombari and freshman Maryam Hussein to move ahead 10-6. The Salukis battled back to tie the set at 13-13, but Pellettieri and Ward delivered back-to-back kills, both set by senior Mihaela Harizanova, to give the Flames a 15-13 victory.
