Softball Split Day One at Carl Vincent Insurance Invitational

Flames fall to Lamar before defeating McNeese

Lake Charles, La. – In their second week of action, the UIC softball team headed south to Louisianna to take part in the Carl Vincent Insurance Invitational hosted by the McNeese State Cowgirls. In their first day of action, the Flames faced the Lamar Cardinals (3-3), and the host, the McNeese State Cowgirls (6-2). Cameran Rios had herself a day, recording an RBI double in game one where the Flames fell to the Cardinals 10-2 in six innings before recording her first career home run against the Cowgirls in game two, helping lead the Flames to a 5-3 victory. The Flames finish the day 1-1, putting their record at 3-4.

GAME ONE
Lamar quickly took the lead, going up 2-0 in the first inning. After a scoreless second inning, UIC was able to get on the board when Siena Stickney reached home on a Cardinal passed ball. Within one, this would be the closest the Flames would get to the Cardinals for the remainder of the game. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Cardinals put up a seven-run inning, including a two-RBI double, taking a 9-1 lead. The Flames added on one run in the top of the fifth when Cameran Rios brought in Stickney with a RBI-double to left center field. The Flames were unable to get anymore momentum going before the Cardinals walked it off in the bottom of the sixth with one run, defeating the Flames 10-2 in six innings.

GAME TWO

After a slow start, the Flames would get the first run of the game in the third inning. Cameran Rios started off the inning with a leadoff double to left center field. Following two outs, Sam Tourtillott brought Rios home with an RBI single to right field, putting the Flames on top. Leading 1-0, the Flames momentum kept rolling in the fourth. With two outs and Siena Stickney on first, Diamond Blomlie stepped up to bat. Blomlie would single to the pitcher, advancing Stickney to second and taking first with Rios up to bat. On a 1-2 count, Rios would homer to right center field, recording her first career home run and giving the Flames a 4-1 lead. The Cowgirls recorded their first run of the game in bottom of the inning, making it a 4-1 ball game at the end of four. A quiet fifth inning would come and go before action picked back up in the sixth. After getting on base with a single to the pitcher, Nina Pesare would advance to second on a passed ball. Pesare would then advance to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an error all within the same play. In the bottom of the inning, the Cowgirls also added on a run, making the score 5-2 after six. In the seventh, the Cowgirls would plate one run, but the Flames would hold strong, securing a 5-3 victory.
