Lake Charles, La. – For the final day at the Carl Vincent Insurance Invitational, the UIC softball team faced a new opponent in the Austin Peay Governors (5-4). The Flames wasted no time, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Governors would add on runs throughout the game, but the Flames remained ahead, defeating Austin Peay 7-5. The Flames finish the weekend 2-3, moving their overall record to 4-6.
Coming out hot, the Flames put up a five-run first inning to take an early lead. With runners on first and second,
Siena Stickney stepped up to bat and singled to center field, scoring
Cameran Rios. During
Sam Tourtellot's at-bat,
Nina Pesare stole home for the Flames second run while Stickney stole third. With
Ari O'Connell up to bat, Stickney would score on a wild pitch while Tourtillott advanced to second. While O'Connell was walked, Tourtillott made her way to third on a passed ball, both O'Connell and Tourtillott would then advance on another passed ball, with Tourtillott scoring. O'Connell would score the final run of the inning on a
Larissa Ortiz fielder's choice. In the top of the second, the Flames added on one run when Tourtillott double to left center field, scoring
Grace Taylor. The bottom half of the inning saw the Governors score three runs as the Flames led 6-3 at the end of two. In the third, the Governors picked up another run, cutting into the Flames lead, but UIC added one back in the top of the fourth when Stickney hit an RBI single to first base, scoring
Trinity Brandhorst. A scoreless fifth inning would come and go before Austin Peay added a run in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 7-5 in favor of UIC. The Flames would hold strong in the seventh, securing the Sunday victory.
