Softball Wins One on Day One of Frost Classic

Flames defeat Cornell before falling to Chattanooga

Chattanooga, Tenn. – For their third tournament of the year, the UIC softball team competed in the Frost Classic hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs. On day one of the tournament, the Flames opened action against the Cornell Big Red before taking on the host, the Mocs. Game one saw a strong third inning by the Flames that propelled them to a 4-2 victory over Cornell. Then, in game two, the host came out strong, putting up a multi-run first inning. Chattanooga would then go on to recorded at least one run each inning, ultimately defeating UIC 15-0 in five innings. The Flames finish the day 1-1, putting their record at 6-7.

GAME ONE
A slow start for both sides, the Flames got the bats swinging in the bottom of the third inning. Cameran Rios collected the games first hit with an infield bunt to load the basses after Samantha White was walked and Diamond Blomlie was hit by a pitch. During Ari O'Connell's at bat, White made her way home to score the first run of the game off a wild pitch. Siena Stickney hit an RBI single to shallow right field, scoring Blomlie to put the Flames up 2-0. With bases once again loaded, an Emily Brecht walk brought home Rios for the third run of the game. Larissa Ortiz then brought in O'Connell off a sac-fly before a Brecht was called out at second, ending the inning. At the end of three, the Flames led 4-0. Both sides would go on to collect one hit in the fourth before a quiet fifth inning came and went. In the top of the sixth, the Big Red got on the board with a 2-run homer to deep left field, but it wouldn't be enough as the Flames remained ahead. UIC recorded a double play to close out the game, defeating Cornell 4-2. Jasmine Whorley was awarded the win, while Trinity Brandhorst picked up the save.

GAME TWO
Chattanooga came out hot, putting up a five hit, five run inning to take a 5-0 lead over UIC in the first. In the top of the second, Sam Tourtillott recorded the Flames first hit of the game with a single through the left side. The Flames were unable to get any more action going before the Mocs added on one run in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 6-0 lead. Samantha White would record a single in the top of the third to left field and advance to second on a sac-bunt but would ultimately be left stranded. Chattanooga would go on to extend their lead in the bottom of the third, going up 12-0 on UIC. Fourth inning action saw Emily Brecht and Siena Stickney hit back-to-back singles up the middle for the Flames while the Mocs picked up three more runs. The top of the fifth saw freshman Jordan McCafferty pick up her first career hit as a Flame when she singled through the left side. In the end, the deficit was too much for the Flames, as they fell 15-0 in five innings to the Mocs.
