HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The UIC baseball team (3-4, 0-0 MVC) closed out its three-game series at Sam Houston State (4-3) on Sunday, as the Flames were in search of their first series sweep of the 2026 season.
The Bearkats gained control of the contest early, plating one run in the home half of the first and adding on four more in the bottom of the third inning, running their advantage to 5-0. The UIC bats came alive in the top of the fifth, as lone runs in the fifth and sixth cut the deficit to 5-2, highlighted by a
Will Smoot RBI double. RBI singles from
Ashton Kampa and
Will Flanigan in the seventh pulled the Flames within one at 5-4, but Sam Houston State answered with an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, and despite loading the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth, the Flames were unable to push across the tying run, dropping the series finale by a 6-4 final score.
The Flames will return to action on Friday, as they will be in Cookeville, Tenn. to take on Tennessee Tech to start a four-team weekend event. UIC will take on Notre Dame Saturday before closing the event against Alabama A&M.
