Baseball Shuts Out Tennessee Tech 8-0 to open the Holiday Inn Classic

The Flames scatter 11 hits as Mason Lei leads another three-pitcher shutout.

COOKEVILLE, TENN – The UIC baseball team (4-4, 0-0 MVC) opened the Holiday Inn Classic in dominant fashion, pounding out 11 hits behind lights-out pitching to shut out Tennessee Tech (5-5, 0-0 OVC), 8-0, at Bush Stadium on Friday night.

After a scoreless first inning, the Flames broke through with four runs in the second on base hits from juniors Thomas Curry, Lucas Smith and freshman Sean Cody. UIC added two insurance runs in the middle innings, highlighted by Curry's second RBI of the game on a single that scored Cody and senior Will Flanigan's RBI single to center that plated senior Will Smoot from second. Cody accounted for the final two runs in the seventh, ripping a double that brought home Flanigan and junior Jake Busson.

For the second straight outing, junior Mason Lei was dominant from the first pitch, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing three hits, walking two and striking out seven on 93 pitches. Seniors Michael Vitellaro and Payton Barton pitched the final two innings, surrendering just one hit over the final two innings as the Flames secured the win.
