Softball Wins One, Ties One on Day Three of Frost Classic

Flames defeat Cornell 6-5 before tying Chattanooga 8-8

Chattanooga, Tenn. – On the final day of the Frost Classic, the UIC softball team closed out the tournament against the Cornell Big Red (2-3) and the Chattanooga Mocs (8-6-1). Game one against the Big Red, the Flames came back from being down 4-0 to defeat Cornell 6-5 in extra innings. Game two against the Mocs, the Flames went out to an early 3-1 lead in the first inning. After the Mocs tied the game in the sixth, the two sides would battle through the seventh, picking up runs, but would remain tied. Due to a travel curfew, the game was called before extra innings would begin, resulting in an 8-8 tie. UIC finished the day with one win and one tied, putting their record at 6-9-1. 

GAME ONE 
Off to a quiet start, the game would remain scoreless through four innings between the Flames and the Big Red. In the fifth inning, Cornell jumped out to a 3-0 lead. UIC would get runner in scoring position in the bottom half of the inning but would fall short. As the sixth inning came and went, the game was on the line for the Flames in the seventh. Up to bat first, Trinity Brandhorst was walked before advancing to second on a Diamond Blomlie sac-bunt. Brandhorst then advanced to third on a wild pitch. With her fourth hit of the game, Cameran Rios hit an RBI single to short, giving the Flames their first run of the game. Rios went on to advance to second on a Sam Tourtillott walk. In a fielder's choice situation, Siena Stickney reached first with a hit to the shortstop, Rios advanced to third, and Tourtillott was called out at second. Then, on a throwing error by the Big Red, the Flames cut the score to one when Rios scored. With the game on the line and two outs with runners on first and third, Ari O'Connell stepped up as a pinch hitter. On a 2-2 count, O'Connell singled to right field, scoring Stickney and tying the game at 3-3, sending the Flames and Big Red into extra inning. Starting with a runner on second base in extra innings, the Big Red went up by one with an RBI single to right field in the eighth. In the bottom of the inning with Emilia Bartholomew as the Flames runner, she would advance to third on a Grace Taylor sac-bunt before scoring on a wild pitch, tying the game once again. In the ninth inning, Cornell once again scored a run in the top half of the inning of an RBI single up the middle to take a 5-4 lead. Then, in the bottom of the inning, Blomlie was placed on second as the runner. On a fielding error by the Big Red, Blomlie advanced to third while Rios reached first. Both would then advance on a wild pitch, with Rios reaching second and Blomlie scoring to tie the game at 4-4. A Tourtillott sac-bunt advanced Rios to third before Stickney stepped up to bat. With a 0-1 count and one out, Stickney walked the game off with a single up the middle, scoring Rios and giving the Flames a 5-4, nine inning victory.

GAME TWO
For their final game of the weekend tournament, the Flames came out to a quick start. Cameran Rios led off with a double to right field before scoring the first run of the game off a Siena Stickney single to right center field. Following the second out of the inning, Emilia Bartholomew stepped up to bat. On the first pitch of her at bat, the freshman crushed her first career home run to deep center field, giving the Flames a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Mocs took a run back, making the score 3-1 at the end of one. A scoreless second inning came and went before both sides picked up one run in the third. The Flames lone run came when Grace Taylor scored off a Rios singled to shallow left field. At the end of three, the Flames led the Mocs 4-2. Chattanooga cut UIC's lead to one in the bottom of the fourth before both teams scored two runs a piece in the fifth. The Flames two runs came from a Sam Tourtillott two-RBI double to right center field After five, the Flames led the Mocs by one. The home team would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth at 6-6 following an RBI single. All tied up heading into the final inning, the Flames came out swinging. Ari O'Connell led off the Flames with a single to right field before Samantha White came in as a pinch runner. After a Blomlie sac-bunt sent White to second, she would score on a Rios single up the middle, putting the Flames on top. With Rios making her way to third, Stickney singled to right field, scoring Rios and extending the Flames lead to 8-6 over the Mocs. In the bottom of the inning, the Mocs would load the bases and tie the game at 8-8. Due to travel limitations, the game was called as the Flames and Mocs end the game in an 8-8 draw after seven innings.

The Flames will get some rest and practice before heading to Madeira Beach, Fla. to take part in the Make it Happen games over the weekend. Over three day, UIC will take on five different opponents.
