Baseball Gears Up to Compete in Tennessee Tech’s Holiday Inn Classic this Weekend

The Flames prepare to face Alabama A&M, the Golden Eagles and Notre Dame.

COOKEVILLE, TENN – After a seven-game swing in the Lonestar state, UIC baseball (3-4, 0-0 MVC) travels south to participate in Tennessee Tech's Holiday Inn Classic over the weekend.

There won't be a game streamed on ESPN+ this weekend, but live stats will be available at UICFlames.com. Fans interested in attending will have free admission to attend, as well as free parking at Bush Stadium.

SCOUTING ALABAMA A&M
  • This will be the first match-up between the Flames and Bulldogs in program history.
  • Shining on the mound for the Bulldogs has been redshirt junior Anthony Mateo on the mound. After two outings, the right hander has pitched 12 1/3 innings, maintaining a 2.19 ERA with three strikeouts this season.
 
SCOUTING NOTRE DAME
  • The Flames and the Fightin' Irish are set to battle it out for the 35th time Saturday morning. Notre Dame leads the overall series, 25-9.
  • Junior hurler Jack Radel was recently named Atlantica Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon, after throwing six perfect innings against UCF, retiring 18 batters on just 68 pitches, striking out nine.
SCOUTING TENNESSEE TECH
  • This will be the 11th match-up between the programs, with the Golden Eagles leading the overall series, 10-1.
  • Redshirt-senior Eddie Garza is off to a hot start in the batter's box, batting a team-leading .375 batting average, collecting 12 hits, two doubles and three RBI.
LAST GAME RECAP – AT SAM HOUSTON STATE
  • Pitching shined in the Flames final weekend in Texas, taking two out of three games in a weekend series at Sam Houston State (4-4, 0-0 CUSA).
  • Junior Mason Lei became the first pitcher since 2022 to reach double-digit strikeouts, striking out 10 batters in six and 1/3 innings of work to lead a three-pitcher complete game shutout Friday, 2-0. His work on the mound earned him Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week Tuesday afternoon.
  • Senior Brandon Bak followed up Lei's performance with a seven inning, five strikeout performance to lead UIC to a 2-1 series clinching series win on Saturday.
  • Junior Thomas Curry and senior Ashton Kampa led the work in the batter's box against the Bearkats, each collecting four hits apiece.
