Baseball Falls to Notre Dame in Saturday Matinee

Two Flames Homer in Early Innings of Defeat

Box Score COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The UIC baseball team (4-5, 0-0 MVC) fell to Notre Dame, 14-3, on Saturday afternoon in a neutral-site contest played in Cookeville, Tenn.

After two scoreless innings to open the game, both teams broke through in the third. The Fighting Irish evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom half before taking the lead for good with a run in the fourth. Notre Dame continued to build its advantage with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to create separation.

UIC struck first in the top of the third inning. Senior Lucas Smith launched a two-run home run to give the Flames an early 2-0 edge. Jake Busson provided a bright spot offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and an RBI. The Flames added their final run in the seventh inning but were unable to keep pace with the Irish offense, which tallied 17 hits on the afternoon.

Brandon Bak (1-1) took the loss for UIC, allowing five earned runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings, striking out seven and walking two. Notre Dame starter Caden Crowell (1-1) earned the win after surrendering two runs on six hits across 5.1 innings of work.
