CHICAGO - UIC women's tennis took on a pair of quality opponents this past weekend. The Flames earned a huge victory when they defeated Toledo 4-3 on Saturday in the most highly competitive match of the season. After taking the doubles point, all singles matches were tightly contested throughout. Sophomore Marta Halberszadt clinched the victory for the Flames when she won at No. 2 singles by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Junior Nia Cooper also won a tightly contested match at No. 5 singles as she won 7-6, 7-5.
The Flames were faced with a quick turnaround as they hit the road to take on Notre Dame Sunday afternoon. The doubles point was tightly contested, and at No. 6 singles, Freshman Charlotte Deletioglu won the opening set before falling in the third set. Notre Dame ended up taking the match 7-0.
The Flames will enjoy a couple days off from competition before taking on Fordham and Roosevelt at home next weekend.
QUOTES FROM COACH LUMPKIN ROBINSON
"We had a very physical weekend with tight match turnarounds. It pushed our capacity and seeing the breakthroughs in doubles and the being a part of such an intense 4-3 win over Toledo was incredible"
"My goal of playing Notre Dame was to prepare us for the level of the NCAA tournament. We were clearly much more settled and confident this year as a whole compared to last year against them."
