COOKEVILLE, TENN. – In the final day of Tennessee Tech's Holiday Inn Classic, the UIC baseball team (4-6, 0-0 MVC) went toe-to-toe against Alabama A&M (3-8, 0-0 SWAC), falling short 5-4 to close out the weekend.
The Bulldogs struck first in the top of the first, but the Flames quickly responded after a lead-off homer from junior
Lucas Smith was followed up by senior
Will Smoot's first home run of the season in the very next at bat in the bottom of the inning. The lead was short-lived however, when the Bulldogs tacked on three runs in the top of the third.
In his first collegiate game, freshman
Karim Patterson hit a shallow single in the right field in the bottom of the fourth that scored senior
Colin Husko all the way from first base to cut into the Bulldog's lead. Alabama A&M quickly responded with additional run the very next half winning.
As the Bulldog's led 5-3 entering the later innings, graduate student
Zack Millsap kept Alabama A&M at bay, pitching three innings, facing a dozen batters, allowing three hits, striking out three and not walking a zero Bulldog. Down to their final three out, the Flames slowly began to rally when a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior
Jake Busson scored Smith, before Alabama A&M secured the win.
