COLUMBIA, Mo. – The UIC baseball team's (4-7, 0-0 MVC) late inning rally came up just short as it lost the first game in its series against Missouri (11-2, 0-0 SEC) 9-8 on Thursday night.
The Tigers struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the first and another in the second to gain an early 3-0 advantage over the Flames.
Will Smoot got the Flames on the board in the fourth, driving in a run on a fielder's choice double play. In the top of the fifth the Flames would add three more runs courtesy of a
Lucas Smith RBI double and a
Thomas Curry RBI single, with Curry later scoring on a wild pitch. Mizzou would extend its lead to 6-4 in the sixth inning before
Jake Busson tied the game with a two RBI double in the seventh. Two Tigers home runs in the bottom of the inning put the score at 9-6.
The Flames attempted a late rally in the final frame, scoring two runs via a
Gavin Acosta walk and
Sean Cody sacrifice fly, but were unable to complete the comeback, leaving the tying run stranded on third as the final out was recorded.
The Flames used five pitchers to cover the game, with
Mark Eddie being credited with the loss (0-1).
Jake Jakubowski (.2 IP) and
Charlie Taczy (1 IP) both had scoreless outings in relief for the Flames.
