Softball Splits with Indiana State

Flames defeat Sycamores in game one before falling in game two

Terre Haute, Ind. – In their second Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) series of the year, the UIC softball team traveled south to take on the Indiana State Sycamores. A doubleheader to open the series, the Flames bats were swinging in game one as they collected 12 hits to earn a 14-2 victory in five innings. Larissa Ortiz and Grace Taylor both hit two-run home runs in the contest. Game two went in favor of the home team, as the Sycamores run-ruled the Flames 9-1 in five innings. The Flames move to 12-13-1, 2-3 in conference play while the Sycamores move to 14-10, 3-2 in conference play.

GAME ONE
Larissa Ortiz opened the scoring early for the Flames hitting a two-run home run in the second inning. Siena Stickney started the third inning driving in a run on a Sycamore error, and the Flames poured it on from there, with Ortiz, Grace Taylor and Cameran Rios picking up RBI and Emilia Bartholomew and Ari O'Connell picking up 2 RBI each. The Flames added 9 in the third inning to go out to a commanding 11-0 lead. A Grace Taylor two-run home run in the fourth inning brought the Flames lead to 13-0. Indiana State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth scoring two runs. The Flames added another run via a Sophie Gerochi sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth bringing the score to 14-2. The Sycamores were unable to score in the bottom of the fifth and the run-rule came in to effect with the Flames leading by 12 after five innings, ending the game.

Starting pitcher Jasmine Whorley struck out four batters only allowing two earned runs in her five innings of work in the circle, earning the win (10-5).

The Flames 14-2 win is their largest margin of victory in conference play since joining the Missouri Valley Conference in 2021 and their first win via run-rule.
