CHICAGO – In a three-game series hampered by inclement weather, the UIC baseball team (4-13-1, 0-0 MVC) fell to UNC Greensboro (10-11, 0-0 SoCo) 8-2 in Sunday's series finale, which was called after six innings due to heavy, persistent rain.
The Spartans managed to get three runs in the top of the first, when junior
Thomas Curry hit a one-out double off the center field wall in the bottom of the inning. Two pitches later, junior
Jake Busson crushed a ball over the left field wall, his team-leading (second in the Missouri Valley Conference) sixth home run of the season to cut into UNCG's lead down to one.
UNCG tacked on two more runs in the next frame before the middle innings remained quiet. Strong defensive play from junior
Vidal Colon shined, when he made two diving grabs out in centerfield to keep the Spartans at bay.
As rain began to fall, UNCG extended its lead with two runs in the top of the fifth on a double and a sacrifice fly. The Flames had chances to respond over the next two innings, but went three up, three down in both frames before the game was called due to weather.
