CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (4-14-1, 0-1 MVC) opened Missouri Conference Play Friday night, dropping the opening game to Southern Illinois (9-11, 1-0 MVC) at Curtis Granderson Stadium, losing to the Salukis, 5-4.
The Flames were the first to get on the board in the bottom of the second inning, when after getting on base with a one-out single, later scoring on an RBI single from senior
Colin Husko. UIC tacked on an additional insurance run when a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior
Vidal Colon scored junior
Andrew Pyszka.
On the mound for the Flames, junior
Mason Lei was dominant early. He went seven innings, faced 23 batters, allowed three runs in the sixth and struck out six.
With the Salukis holding a one-run lead in the late innings, Wright delivered again with a two-RBI single, scoring junior
Thomas Curry and senior
Will Flanigan in the bottom of the seventh. Southern Illinois regained the lead with a two-run home run in the ninth. The Flames threatened in the bottom half, loading the bases, but a game-ending double play sealed the loss.
