Track and Field Posts Historic Performance at MVC Championships

Flames Set Eight Top-Ten Marks, 11 New Personal Bests

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The UIC track and field program delivered one of its strongest conference performances to date at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, held March 1-2 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

The Flames recorded eight Top-10 marks in program indoor history, 11 new personal-best performances and one new school record over the two-day meet. UIC also tallied its most team points since joining the Missouri Valley Conference.

The men's team placed seventh out of 10 teams with 35 points, while the women finished ninth out of 11 teams with 15 points.

MEN'S

UIC made history in the Distance Medley Relay, as Aiden Massaro, Hugo Rincon, Zachary Barisa and Theodore Cunningham captured first place with a time of 9:59.27. The victory marked the program's first-ever MVC event championship.

Daniel Chavez added a standout performance in the 3000m, earning a silver medal with a school-record time of 8:10.16. His mark set a new UIC indoor standard in the event. Teammate Alex Bacci also scored in the 3000m, placing sixth in 8:17.15 — the No. 2 time in program history.

WOMEN'S

Korima Gonzalez led the way on the women's side with a runner-up finish in the 800m, clocking 2:11.43 — the fourth-fastest indoor time in UIC history.

The 4x400m relay team of Jorie Irving, Chineye Ifeajekwu, Korima Gonzalez and Alayna Filipiak placed fifth overall in 3:55.24.

In the field events, Hannah Oluwatomi Oloro secured a sixth-place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 1.66m, tying for the No. 4 mark all-time indoors at UIC.

COACH'S COMMENTS

"The MVC is one of the most competitive conferences in the country and our program put together an outstanding effort this weekend to make this one of our best yet," said UIC head coach Paul Zavala.

"Our coaching staff is proud to have multiple team members with Top-8 podium finishers and our first-ever MVC event champion through our Men's Distance Medley Relay team."

UIC opens the outdoor season on Saturday, March 28 at the Joyce Morton-Kief Invite, hosted by Illinois State University.
