Chavez Leads Charge in Record-Setting Weekend

Flames Set Seven Top-Ten School Records in Split-Squad Meets

CHICAGO Ill. - In a split squad weekend, the Flames stole some of the spotlight and tacked on seven top-10 records after competing in the WashU Distance Carnival hosted by Washington University in St. Louis and the Joyce Morton-Kief Invitational hosted by Illinois State University. Across both meets, the squads combined for seven top-10 UIC All-time outdoor performances, 14 new personal best outdoor performances, and one school record! 

WOMEN

In the WashU Distance Carnival, Korima Gonzalez finished in fourth place with a time of 2:12.01 in the 800m, ranking seventh all-time in UIC Outdoor performances. Indigo Sterud finished 33rd in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:31.87, finishing fourth all in UIC outdoor performances. 

At the Joyce Morton-Kief Invitational, the ladies combined for an eighth place finish across 11 teams. Makaya Phillips finished in second in long jump with a distance of 5.59m while Mia Maglaya finished in 7th in the triple jump with a distance of 11.46m, ranking fifth all-time in UIC outdoor performances. 

MEN

Participating in the WashU Distance Carnival, Daniel Chavez set a new school record finishing fourth in the 5000m with an electric time of 13:56. Zachary Close stayed close behind in the 5000m, finishing 25th with a time of 14:29.28 and ranking fifth all-time in UIC outdoor performances. 

The level didn't drop at the Joyce Morton-Kief Invitational as the men's team finished in third out of ten teams. Shmouel Sackman took first in the 100m with a time of 10.87. Amare Harris finished second in the 200m with a time of 21.75. 

COACH'S THOUGHTS

"We had a great start to our Outdoor Season with strong performances at both competitions and several new additions to our Top 10 lists…Also, congratulations to Daniel [Chavez] on his record setting performance in the 5000m and setting the tone for our program's success this outdoor season." said Head Coach Paul Zavala.

UP NEXT

The Flames return to action after a week off at the Illini Deca Jam, hosted by sister school University of Illinois on Saturday, April 11. Competitions are expected to begin at 11:00 a.m. (CT) with field events. Track events are to tentatively follow at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
