Baseball Earns 8-2 Victory over Murray State Saturday Afternoon

Strong pitching and a five-run fourth inning propel the Flames to a series-clinching win.

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (11-20-1, 6-5 MVC) couldn't be stopped on the mound and in the batter's box Saturday afternoon, defeating Murray State (21-14, 7-4 MVC) 8-2 in front of the home crowd at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Missouri Valley Conference weekend action.
The Flames were quick to get on the board in the first two innings, as junior Ashton Kampa hit an opposite field solo home run off the left field for his fifth home run of the season. Senior Will Flanigan would soon follow with his lone solo home run in the next inning, his first of the season, giving UIC an early 2-0 lead.
The game would soon break open in the bottom of the fourth inning in favor of the Flames. After freshman Sean Cody would score on a bases loaded walk, junior Jake Busson would take a 1-0 pitch over the left center field wall for a grand slam, his MVC-leading 12th home run of the season. The Flames entered the middle innings ahead, 7-0
From the moment he stepped on the mound, senior Brandon Bak was dialed in, and Murray State couldn't keep up. He held the Racers hitless after four innings, striking out three batters and just walking one in that span. He finished his day pitching six innings, striking out six, allowing three hits, two walks and one run scored.
After the Racer's cut into the Flame's lead in the top of the sixth with a run scored, UIC quickly responded when in the bottom of the seventh, junior Alexander Wright doubled to right field and later scored on an RBI single off the bat of Cody.
The Flames leaned on their bullpen in the later innings, with strong work from both graduate student Mark Eddie and freshman Aidan Terronez. Eddie collected two innings of work, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Terronez finished the game for the Flames in the bottom of the ninth, allowing one earned run, striking out a pair of batters before forcing Murray State's Parker Airhart to ground out to graduate student Gavin Acosta at second to secure UIC the victory.
