Softball Picks Up Two Against Valparaiso

Flames defeats Beacons 6-2, 12-4

Valparaiso, Ind. – In a Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) doubleheader, the UIC softball team traveled one hour south the take on the Valparaiso Beacons for their eighth conference series of the year. With adjusted game times due to weather, the Flames and Beacons were underway at 2:00 p.m. with mid-day action. Game one was a quiet contest before the Flames broke out with four runs in the third. From there, the Flames held strong, going on to record a 6-2 victory. Game tow action began in favor of the Beacons, but the Flames quickly turned momentum in favor of them with a five-run second inning. UIC would go on to record a 12-4, 5-inning victory. The Flames move to 19-24-1, 8-14 in conference play while the Beacons move to 16-25, 4-14 in conference play. 
 
GAME ONE 
The Flames defense got the action going early with Cameran Rios and Sam Tourtillott connecting to get an inning ending double play in the first. Offensively, Emily Brecht collected the Flames first hit of the game in the second with a double to left center field, but it wouldn't be until the third when either side recorded a run. Grace Taylor began the third inning with a leadoff single to left field before advancing to second on a sac-bunt by Rios. Siena Stickney brought home Taylor with an RBI single to center field before she advanced to second on the throw. Stickney would go on to steal third before scoring on a throwing error by the Beacons, putting the Flames up 2-0 with one out. With runners on first and second, Brecht would record her second hit of the day with a RBI single up the middle that scored Sam TourtillottNina Pesare earned a RBI with a fielder's choice situation that allowed Larissa Ortiz to make her way home. In the bottom half of the inning, the Beacons plated one, making the score 4-1 in favor of the Flames. Fourth inning action saw both teams bring home one run, with Taylor coming home for the Flames on a Tourtillott RBI. In the fifth, the Flames scored the final run on the game. With Ari O'Connell reaching on a fielding error, Sophie Gerochi would step up to bat and hit an RBI triple to right center field to give UIC a 6-2 lead. On the mound, Jasmine Whorley would throw 3-up, 3-down innings to close out the contest and earn her 14th victory of the season.

GAME TWO
Valparaiso started off quick, with a four-run first inning to take an early lead, but it wouldn't last long as the Flames quickly responded with a five-run second inning. A single through the right side from Nina Pesare brought home Grace Taylor for the Flames first run of the game. A Cameran Rios fielder's choice situation followed by a Beacon error allowed Pesare and Ari O'Connell to score. Sam Tourtillott brought in the next run with an RBI double to left center field to tie the game. A sac-fly by Emily Brecht scored Siena Stickney and gave the Flames a 5-4 lead. In the third, the Flames extended their lead by four more runs. Sophie Gerochi led off the inning with her first career home run, sending the ball deep out of right center field. Then, with bases loaded, Stickney hit a fly out to right field, but runners were able to advance on the throw and Taylor would be called safe at the plate. Tourtillott followed with a two-RBI single to center field, scoring Rios and Pesare. At the end of three, UIC led Valparaiso 9-4. In the fifth, the Flames scored three more runs and with a huge defensive play, implemented run-rule against the Beacons. Stickney would hit an RBI single down the right field line to bring home Pesare before advancing to second on an error by the Beacons for the first run of the inning. Stickney would then score herself from second on a Tourtillott sac-fly. The Flames would then took an eight-run lead when Brecht recorded her second career homer to left field. Defensively, in the bottom half of the inning, the Flames would come up with a 3-up, 3- down inning, including a game ending diving catch against the wall for Taylor, securing a 12-4 victory in five innings for UIC. Trinity Brandhorst earned her 5th win of the season.
