CHICAGO – After winning the first meeting between the two Chicago based schools, the UIC softball team (19-25-1, 8-14 MVC) was unable to beat Big East conference opponent DePaul (15-24, 4-11 Big East) in its second matchup. After falling behind early, the Flames tied the game in the fifth inning but surrendered the lead in the seventh to lose 6-3.
DePaul jumped on the Flames early, scoring two in the top of the first inning. The Blue Demons would go on to plate another in the second inning to go up by three. The Flames answered in the third with
Nina Pesare scoring on a fielder's choice bringing the score to 3-1.
Grace Taylor,
Ari O'Connell and
Sam Tourtillott turned a double play off a fly ball to end a Blue Demons scoring threat in the fourth inning, keeping the deficit at two. With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fifth,
Emily Brecht ripped an RBI single to center field, followed by a
Larissa Ortiz sacrifice fly scoring
Siena Stickney to tie the game at three a piece. The Flames loaded the bases again in the sixth but were unable to capitalize.
In the final frame DePaul put up a three spot to regain the lead. In the bottom half of the inning the Flames got a runner on base but were unable to score and lost by a final of 6-3.
Starting pitcher
Jasmine Whorley settled in after the first two innings, posting four straight scoreless innings. Whorley's final line is 7 innings, six runs allowed and 4 strike outs. Whorley was credited with the loss (14-12).
