Softball Suffers Loss to Purdue

Flames fall to Boilermakers 12-2 in five innings

West Lafayette, Ind. – In a midweek, non-conference contest, the UIC softball team hit the road to take on the Purdue Boilermakers for a mid-day solo game. The Flames got the game going with the first run, but the Boilermakers quickly responded with a six run first inning and never looked back. Purdue would go up by 10 runs in the third, and hold the lead through the fifth, implementing run-rule as they went on to defeat the UIC 12-2 in five innings. The Flames move to 19-26-1 overall while the Boilermakers move to 31-15 overall.

The Flames recorded the first run of the game without recording a hit. Cameran Rios led off the Flames reaching base on an error by the Boilermakers. Rios would advance to second during Siena Stickney's at-bat before scoring an unearned run when Sam Tourtillott reached on an error by Purdue. The early lead wouldn't last long for UIC, as Purdue came out with a six hit, six run inning at the end of the first, taking a 6-1 lead. Both teams went on to record a hit in the second, but neither brought a run in. Grace Taylor recorded the Flames hit with a single through the left side. In the third, Rios and Stickney collected hits, but the Flames would go without a run. Bottom inning action saw the Boilermakers put up five runs, taking an 11-1 lead. Both teams recorded a run in the fourth. With Larissa Ortiz on first followed by a fielder's choice, Ortiz would make her way home for UIC's final run of the game when Sophie Gerochi reached on a throwing error before making her way to third. Purdue ended the inning scoring one run to take their ultimate 12-2 lead. The Flames were unable to get any action going in the fifth, falling to the Boilermakers.
