CHICAGO – After trailing for most of the game, the UIC baseball team (15-21-1, 10-5 MVC) completed its second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference series sweep, defeating Valparaiso (9-26, 2-10 MVC) in extra innings, behind a walk-off RBI single from freshman
Sean Cody.
After Cody made an incredible defensive play for the first out of the game, the Beacons began to rally with four runs in the top of the first before graduate student
Jacob Jakubowski enter the game in relief, forcing back-to-back pop outs to end the inning.
The Flames first hit came in the bottom of the second, when senior
Colin Husko hit a two-out single to left field, but was left stranded after Cody flew out on the next pitch. Jakubowski kept Valparaiso quiet for his second 1-2-3 inning to end his outing in the top of the third. The hurler went 2.2 innings, didn't allow a single hit, walk or base runner in his 33-pitch outing.
Junior
Vidal Colon would collect the next hit for the Flames in the bottom of the third, stealing second base later in the frame before ultimately was left on base. The Beacons looked to add to their lead, but behind the work from graduate students
Jared Lessman and
Mark Eddie, they continued to remain silent entering the latter-half of the game.
UIC would finally get on board in the bottom of the sixth, when junior
Ashton Kampa crushed a 400-foot home run over the right field wall for his seventh of the season to cut into Valparaiso's lead, 4-1
A few innings later, in the top of the eighth, junior
Jake Busson would single on the left side, followed by Kampa getting hit by the pitch. On the first pitch he sees, junior
Thomas Curry crushes his second three-run home run of the week, sailing it 373 feet over the left fielder to tie it up heading into the ninth.
Freshman
Aidan Terronez would take the mound for UIC in the top of the ninth, keeping Valparaiso at bay heading into extra innings. In the 11th, after allowing a triple to Brayden Pleau, Terronez struck out two before facing his final batter of his outing, Thomas Cooper. Cooper would hit a hard shot to the left side, where Cody would make a diving grab, make a hard throw to beat Cooper to the bag for the final out of the inning.
After the Flames failed to score in the bottom of the inning, graduate student
Zack Millsap continued the strong work of the bullpen, after leaving one runner on and not allowing a single hit in the 12
th. The Flames would secure the win in the bottom of the inning, after the bases were loaded with two outs when Cody stepped up to the plate for his fifth at-bat of the night. After Valparaiso's Dalton Swinehart caused him to swing on the first pitch, Cody would sail the second pitch into right field, scoring Busson from third to win the game.
