CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (16-23-1, 10-5 MVC) enters the weekend on a strong note Friday afternoon, collecting a 10-7 victory over Youngstown State (9-32, 6-9 Horizon League) in front of a loud crowd on Education Day.
UIC struck first in the bottom of the first as senior
Will Flanigan and junior
Jake Busson led off back-to-back walks. After moving to scoring position on a fielder's choice, the two base runners would score on junior
Andrew Pyszka's single to left.
The Penguins answered with four runs in the second, but starter
Mason Lei settled in. He closed his third inning with two strikeouts, including a swinging strikeout of Misael Uriepero with a runner stranded at third.
UIC later tied it in the bottom of third when junior
James Hackett delivered a two-out, bases loaded single to right, scoring Pyszka and junior
Vidal Colon to make it 4-4.
The Flames regained the lead in the fourth as Busson hit a 442-foot home run to left, his Missouri Valley Conference-leading 13th of the season. He added a two-run double in the fifth, finishing 4 for 4 with four RBIs.
Hackett drove in his third run in the sixth with an RBI single that scored Colon. Later in the inning, graduate student
Gavin Acosta also added an RBI single, scoring freshman
Sean Cody from second.
Lei carried the Flames into the later innings before a home run by Chyran Humphries ended his outing. He allowed six hits and three walks while striking out seven over 6.1 innings.
The Penguins scored twice more late, but graduate student
Zack Millsap secured the win on the mound with back-to-back popouts in the bottom of the ninth.
