CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team's (17-23-1, 10-5 MVC) bats came alive in the later innings Saturday afternoon, securing a series-clinching win over Youngstown State (9-33, 6-9 Horizon) 6-3 at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
After a quiet first two innings, the Flames struck first in the third when graduate student
Gavin Acosta doubled to left center, scoring junior
Vidal Colon from first.
Early on, the game showed signs of a pitcher's duel between senior
Brandon Bak and Youngstown State's Jack Messmore. Bak went 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs while recording a career-high 10 strikeouts, including striking out the side in the sixth.
Youngstown State held a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh before UIC erupted for four runs. Junior
James Hackett started the rally with an RBI single, scoring junior
Andrew Pyszka from third. After Colon walked, freshman
Karim Patterson drove a 1-2 pitch from Bryce Palms into right field, clearing the bases as Hackett, Colon and freshman
Sean Cody scored to give UIC the lead.
After Bak's day ended, graduate student
Mark Eddie took over and found his rhythm in the eighth. With the Penguin's Brady Shannon on third and one out, Eddie induced a popout from Misael Uriepero before ending the inning with a three-pitch swinging strikeout of Nic Goodwin.
In the bottom of the eighth, junior
Ashton Kampa added an insurance run with a 400-foot solo homer to right — his ninth of the season. Eddie closed it out in the ninth on the mound with a 1-2-3 inning to secure the win.
