Softball’s Early Lead Not Enough in Loss to Notre Dame

Flames fall to Fighting Irish 13-5 in five innings

South Bend, Ind. – In their final non-conference game of the 2026 season, the UIC softball team hit the road to take on ACC opponent, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. An early back-and-forth affair ended in favor of the home team as they notched a six run fifth inning to give the Fighting Irish a 13-5 run rule victory over the Flames. UIC falls to 21-29-1 overall while Notre Dame improves to 24-27 overall.

The Flames got the action going early, with two runs scored in the top of the first inning. Cameran Rios began the game with a lead off single to left field. She would go on to score off a Larissa Ortiz RBI single up the middle to put the Flames on the board. With two outs on the board, the Flames picked up their second run when Sam Tourtillott scored on a wild pitch. At the end of the first inning, the Flames led the Fighting Irish 2-0.

In the second, the Fighting Irish collected their second hit of the game, but neither side would record a run.

Third inning action saw Rios knock another single, this time to the right-side infield for her second hit of the game. After a sac-bunt by Siena Stickney moved Rios to second, Tourtillott would step up to bat and record her team leading seventh home run of the season to right field, extending the Flames to a 4-0 lead.

The Fighting Irish would find their stride in the bottom of the second, notching a five-run inning, including a two-run home run of their own to take a 5-4 lead over the Flames at the end of three.

In the fourth, Rios collected her third hit of the game with an RBI single through the right-side infield, scoring Grace Taylor and tying the game at 5-5. Notre Dame took back the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer to lead UIC 7-5.

After a one hit, scoreless top of the inning for the Flames, the Fighting Irish would continue to find their momentum in the bottom of the fifth inning. With a four hit, six run inning, the Fighting Irish took an eight-run lead over the Flames, implementing rune rule as UIC fell to Notre Dame 13-5.
