Baseball Earns Series Finale Victory at Indiana State Saturday Night

Strong pitching and a 16-hit attack powers UIC to a 17-3 seven-inning victory.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Finishing up its third series in Missouri Valley Conference play, the UIC baseball team (9-19-1, 4-5 MVC) collected a series finale victory over Indiana State (16-15, 6-3 MVC) at Bob Warn Field Saturday night, defeating the Sycamores 17-3 in seven innings of play.

The Flames were quick to strike in the top of the first with four hits, including an RBI double from junior Jake Busson and a two-RBI single up the middle on a 1-0 pitch from junior Lucas Smith, scoring Busson and junior Ashton Kampa to give UIC an early 3-0 lead.

The game broke wide open in favor of the Flames in the top of the third, with UIC plating nine runners on eight hits. Busson, Smith, Kampa, freshman Sean Cody, juniors Andrew Pyszka and Vidal Colon all earned RBIs throughout the inning, giving the Flames a 12-0 lead.

From his first pitch, senior Kendal Lyons was dialed in and made the Sycamores paid for it. He pitched 5.1 innings, allowing just five hits, one earned run, striking out three and walking just one batter. Graduate student Mark Eddie finished the game on the mound, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one.

Going into the top of the seventh up 13-3, back-to-back bases loaded walks scored junior Thomas Curry and Busson. The Flames closed out the frame with a two-RBI single to right field off the bat of senior Colin Husko that score senior Will Flanigan and Colon.

Eddie secured the run-ruling victory after the seventh inning stretch with a fly out to left field to end the game.
